Killer still at large 5 years after Brittany Phillips' murder Aug. 28, 2009
It's been five years since Tulsa college student Brittany Phillips was brutally murdered inside her apartment, and still the case remains unsolved.
In the past five years, DNA from the crime scene has been checked against thousands of potential suspects. But there have been no matches. Investigators now suspect Brittany may not have known her attacker.
The fact that no one has been arrested makes the anniversary of her death more difficult for her mother, Dr. Maggie Zingman, who refuses to give up fighting for answers.
She tells 2NEWS, "And in some ways, I can't believe it has been five years. It was hard enough for me to except that she had been murdered. But now it has been five years and we still haven't found her killer."
Broken Arrow Lanes is sponsoring a fundraiser Sunday to raise money for the reward fund in Brittany's case. The event will be held on what would have been her 24th birthday.
"Bowling for Brittany" will be held October 4th from 2 pm to 4 pm at 4701 S Elm.
Anyone with information about Brittany Phillips' murder is asked to Crime Stoppers at 596-COPS.

Mother presses on in search for daughter's killer Oct. 1, 2009
Five years after her daughter was raped and killed, Maggie Zingman continues her pursuit of the killer and changes in legislation that might save others from the same fate. Brittany Phillips, 18, was found dead in her apartment near 65th Street and Mingo Road on Sept. 30, 2004. Police believe the Tulsa Community College student had been dead for some time before she was found.
The DNA of dozens of suspects has been tested. Detectives’ hopes have been dashed several times when suspects who seemed likely to have been the killer were eliminated.
On Sunday, the anniversary of the date that Zingman buried her daughter, a benefit will be held to raise money for a reward fund and Zingman’s efforts to publicize the case. “Bowling for Brittany” will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at Broken Arrow Lanes.
Zingman said she can’t believe that five years have passed since her daughter’s death. The milestone brings with it a wave of emotions.
“I never expected my daughter to be murdered, and then it happened,” she said. “After it happened, I never expected that five years later it would still be considered a mysterious murder.”
But Zingman said what most frightens her is that although lead Detective Jeff Felton and other investigators in the Tulsa Police Homicide Unit have made significant efforts to keep the investigation active, it has not been solved.
“They have turned over every stone,” she said. “They have done everything they could do to keep it from becoming a cold case, and that is what scares me. I am starting to realize that we may never
solve this case.” That’s why she thinks it is becoming more apparent that something is wrong with the legal system, which she believes is lax on sex offenders. She thinks the killer likely had committed similar crimes but slipped through the cracks.
Zingman stays in contact with police and legislators to work on strengthening rape laws and to draw attention to the DNA-testing backlog.
“We can’t bring Brittany back, but I am going to use her name and her story to change these laws so maybe this does not happen to someone else,” Zingman said.
She also has aggressively sought to bring attention to her daughter’s homicide in hopes of generating leads in the case. She has even worked to have billboards about the homicide posted in Tulsa.
Because so many Tulsa-area suspects have been eliminated, Zingman thinks the killer might have moved away. In five trips across sections of the country, she has traveled more than 23,000 miles seeking publicity for the case.
She travels in a Toyota RAV4 that is wrapped in large pictures of Phillips throughout her life. It displays a description of her killing and is decorated in bright pink and purple — Phillips’ favorite colors.
Zingman said she has no plans of curtailing these efforts anytime soon.
“At 10, 15, even 20 years, if I am still alive, I am going to keep trying to find her killer,” she said.
