Tara Leigh Calico?
Missing Since: September 20, 1988 from Belen, New Mexico Classification: Endangered Missing Date Of Birth: February 28, 1969 Age at Disappearance: 19 years old Height and Weight: 5'7; 120 pounds Distinguishing Characteristics: Brown hair; green eyes. Calico has a large scar on the back of her right shoulder. She has a dime-sized brown-colored birthmark on the back of one of her legs. NCIC Number: M-461117833 (Please refer to this number when contacting law enforcement concerning this case.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Calico was last seen riding her pink Huffy bicycle on Highway 47 in Valencia County, New Mexico on September 20, 1988 at approximately 11:45 AM. She has never been seen again. Calico biked the route daily during her routine 36-mile ride. Witnesses saw a dirty white or light gray-colored 1953 Ford pickup truck with a white handmade shell following Calico during her ride. It is not known if the truck is connected to her presumed abduction. Calico's bicycle has never been located. Foul play is suspected in her disappearance. Broken pieces of her Walkman were later found, and may have been dropped by Calico as clues to her abduction.
Rumors have persisted for years that Calico was the unidentified female in a Polaroid photo discovered in St. Joe, Florida on June 15, 1989, nine months following her disappearance. The photo was located on the ground in a convenience store's parking lot in St. Joe. A white, late 80's Toyota cargo van had been parked in the spot prior to the discovery of the picture. Authorities believe that the girl in the photo was seen walking along the beach in St. Joe shortly before the Polaroid was located. Witnesses said that the girl was accompanied by several unidentified adult Caucasian males who appeared to be giving her verbal orders. It is not known if this girl was being held against her will by these individuals or if the incident was staged. Investigators are still trying to ascertain the girl's identity, which would allow them to close the case or investigate further.
A copy of My Sweet Audrina by V.C. Andrews, a plastic cup and a squirt gun are also visible in the photo. Polaroid officials say the picture was taken with film not available until May 1989. Two other photos later surfaced. The first was found near a residential construction site in Montecito, California. This Polaroid, taken on film not available until June 1989, shows the blurry image of a girl's face, her mouth again covered with tape, her hairline exhibiting that same cowlick at the right temple. Behind her is light-blue striped fabric similar to that on the pillow in the Toyota van photo. A third Polaroid, this one taken on film not available until February 1990, shows a woman loosely bound in gauze, her eyes covered with more gauze and large black-framed glasses. A man is sitting next to her on a passenger seat of an Amtrak train. [I've read this photo is thought by some to be a hoax.]
An unidentified boy was also pictured in the photo; both he and the girl were bound and gagged. Some people believed that the boy in the picture was Michael Henley who vanished on a turkey hunt with his father in April 1988 in the mountains south of their hometown of Milan, N.M. [Remains found in the Zuni mountains in June 1990 were eventually identified as Henley's. It is believed he died while on the turkey hunt.]
Though the FBI denies the female in the photo is Tara, scientific analysis done by another professional authority claims it is indeed Tara, providing investigators with the only remote lead in the case. There were numerous unconfirmed sightings of Tara in 1988 and 1989, mostly in the southern half of the United States. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 20, 1988 Tara left her home at about 9:30 in the morning to go on her customary bike ride. She told her mother, Patty Doel, to come and get her if she wasn't home by noon. Patty went searching for Tara along her usual bike route but could not find her and contacted the police. Part of her Sony Walkman and a Boston cassette tape were discovered along the route and Patty believed that Tara may have left these items in an attempt to mark her trail. Several people saw Tara riding her bicycle, which has also never been found. No one witnessed her presumed abduction, although several witnesses did observe a 1953 or 1954 Ford pickup following her, but it is not known if this vehicle was connected to her disappearance. All efforts to locate the pickup have failed.
On June 15, 1989, a Polaroid photo of an unidentified young girl and boy, both bound and gagged, was found in the parking lot of a convenience store in Port St. Joe, Florida. It was theorized that the girl in the photo was Tara and that the boy was Michael Henley, also of New Mexico, who had disappeared in April 1988. The book that is next to the girl in the photo is the gothic horror novel "My Sweet Audrina" by V.C. Andrews which was published in 1982. According to investigators the picture had to have been taken after May 1989 because the particular film used in the photograph was not available until then. Despite much conjecture, the identification of the boy in the photograph as Michael Henley seems unlikely because his remains were discovered in 1990 in the Zuni Mountains where he had disappeared. (Foul play is not suspected in his death.) The Zuni mountains are about 75 miles from where Tara disappeared. Nonetheless, her mother believed the girl in the photo was indeed her daughter due in part to what appeared to be a scar on the girl's leg similar to one Tara received in a car accident. However, the FBI was unable to conclusively prove that it was Tara in the photograph.
Two other Polaroid photographs, possibly of Tara, have surfaced over the years, but they have yet to be released to the public.[citation needed] [1]
There were several reported sightings of her in 1988 and 1989, mostly in the southern half of the U.S. However, none of these sightings could be confirmed.
Twenty years after her disappearance, Rene Rivera, sheriff of Valencia County announced that he knew what happened to Tara Calico. According to Rivera, boys who knew her from school drove up behind her in a truck and some form of accident followed. Tara later died and those responsible covered up the crime. Rivera states he knows the names of those involved, but that, without a body, he cannot make a case. He has not released whatever evidence has led him to this conclusion. No arrests have been made, and the case remains open.[2]
